A major barrier to progress in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector is the lack of access to formal capital. Despite its importance as a livelihood for millions, ASGM operators often struggle to secure loans, lines of credit, or attract investors. This financing gap limits their ability to invest in improved technologies and processes—particularly those that reduce or eliminate the use of mercury, which remains common in many regions. The issue is not only environmental and health-related; it is fundamentally economic.
One of the root causes of this financing gap is the lack of reliable geological and technical information. ASGM operations often rely on tradition and personal expertise, with little formal understanding of the resource’s potential. Without this knowledge, it is difficult to develop credible business plans—an essential first step toward accessing formal financing.
To address this challenge, the Artisanal Gold Council (AGC), with support from planetGOLD, has developed the ASGM Technical Report Writing Guide. This practical tool helps local geological professionals produce high-quality technical reports tailored to the needs and realities of the ASGM sector.
Led by AGC’s technical team in Colombia, with contributions from AGC experts in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, the guide adapts recognized mining reporting standards to suit the smaller scale, limited budgets, and specific operating contexts of artisanal miners. AGC’s international technical staff also provide oversight and guidance to ensure consistent quality.
What the Guide Offers
The guide is designed for use by local technical consultants working with ASGM cooperatives. It provides:
Meeting Investor Needs and Reducing Perceived Risk
ASGM projects are often overlooked by financial institutions—not due to poor economics, but due to poor presentation. Informal data, unclear ownership structures, and unverifiable ownership create a perception of high risk. This guide directly addresses those concerns by supporting the creation of professional, transparent, and investor-ready reports.
The guide reflects the expectations of responsible investors and lenders and serves as a bridge between ASGM operators and the financial community.
Strengthening the Sector
By improving the quality of technical reporting, the ASGM Technical Report Writing Guide helps build investor confidence in the sector. In doing so, it supports ASGM’s transition to cleaner, safer, and more sustainable practices.
This guide reflects AGC’s broader commitment to developing practical, field-tested tools that empower mining communities and align with the requirements of financial, development, and policy partners.
